Mastodon frustrates a lot of people who leverage social networks for their own business. A business that may well be rooted in good intentions and noble causes. Mastodon poses a problem for them because it's not a viral system.
Indeed, there is no emotional echo chamber. There's no virality based on negative feelings or sentiments that would polarize any debate. There isn't some nauseating engineering that precisely exploits reactions to favor whatever will stir up more controversy.
No, Mastodon is simply a succession of little things. Written according to moods or intentions, with the sole hope that perhaps they will be useful or heard. Little messages in digital bottles.
Mastodon doesn't use you. It doesn't sell anything. It's simply you.
And that is unbearable for those who rely on the leveraging effects of manipulative algorithms. This sectarian system, initially exploited by Facebook, but also by state political propaganda for many years. An exploitation that allows for the manipulation of peoples. A system that polarizes credulous societies—because societies always are, and democracies even more so. These destructive algorithms of critical thinking, perfidious and deceptive. These thieves of time. These tools of democratic erosion, weapons of mass destruction of harmony, for the benefit of an alternative narrative that will only serve the most powerful, who are the richest. And we, poor, credulous citizens, are pawns sacrificed without a second thought.
No, Mastodon is none of that.
And too bad for the Bannons or Thiels.
