Investments in AI and its real or supposed benefits

Some believe that despite the frightening debt levels of AI tech companies, the benefits they bring are worth it. That criticizing the financial acrobatics involved in balancing such considerable debt in this field shows little progressiveness in view of the benefits that AI generates.

However, I don't really see where the significant advances in AI are, or what the real benefits are for our daily lives and our future. It's not very clear. In medicine? Certainly, there are some applications that enable substantial advances in research and even surgery. But is that worth more than $1 trillion (on credit)?

In any case, I am not convinced that the few opportunities available are worth the considerable, even staggering, amounts of money spent. Finally, when you consider the sums that could be invested to provide access to water for all women and men on the planet (a UN plan that has been published but which everyone seems to have forgotten), the current interest in AI seems rather meager.

So, this is what we need to compare: the astronomical sums invested in AI and the UN's sustainable development goals, and see what is really worthwhile for all of us.
